Looking for a new air rifle stock? Team Wild TV expert Matt Dubber is here to explain why it’s important to pick the right rifle stock for your shooting style.

Why is it important to choose the correct rifle stock? – Stocks come in many shapes, sizes and weights. Each one has unique features that are suitable for all situations, it’s very important to make sure that your stock choice complements your shooting style.

What factors do you need to consider when deciding on the most suitable rifle stock for your shooting needs? – Weight is a huge factor to consider. Target-style stocks will be heavier and chunkier…Great for FT or Benchrest, but not fun to carry around when hunting. If you’re left handed, you will obviously want to choose a left hand stock, or an ambidextrous stock. Some stocks are also more robust than others, and this is something to consider when hunting in rough weather or through dense bush where your rifle is likely to get bumped around. Some wood is harder than other wood, and there’s always the option of synthetic stocks if damage is something of concern.

How would it effect your shooting if you were using the wrong stock on your rifle? – You would feel uncomfortable, and as a result you will be more likely to “pull” a shot at the last moment. If you’re lugging a heavy stock around, you might find yourself tiring more easily. On the other hand, if you choose a light stock for a benchrest competition, the rifle will have less inertia and therefore move around more than you might like it to.

What advice would you give someone who is unsure which stock they should use? – If you’re unsure of what to choose, the best thing you can do is to go to your nearest gun shop and feel for yourself – Bring the rifle to your shoulder, close your eyes and compare between different stocks to see what feels most comfortable. That’s the most important thing to remember – Comfort is key! You won’t easily get the results you want if you can’t relax behind the scope.
